In August, 2025, I will be hosting a number of new workshops. Have a look below at what’s happening and be sure to Contact me for more details and/or to register.
“Open Studio Painting Workshop” (4 separate sessions)
Sunday, August 3rd, 10am – 2pm,
Sunday, August 17th 10am – 2pm,
Sunday, August 24th, 10am – 2pm
Sunday, August 30th, 10am – 2pm
$50 for one, $90 for two, $130 three, $170 for all four
During these four hour sessions, students will bring works in progress or painting ideas. With the paintings in front of us, we will troubleshoot any issues you have been having and do appropriately designed demonstrations that will give your paintings the nudge (or shove!) that they need to progress. I will have all of my supplies and paintings on hand which will give us a multitude of resources to work with. Small group critiques will also be conducted at the end of each session. Bring your paints and brushes and of course your paintings! Additional supplies will be mailed upon registration. Student limit is 5 so register quickly!
All four of the above workshops held in my Burnt Hill studio outside of Oxford
Saturday, August 16th: Colour Mixing workshop. 10am-2pm.
Designed for painters of all levels, this workshop will introduce students to colour terminology, lingo and of course strategies for achieving the right colour in either oils, acrylics and even watercolours and coloured pencils. We will do a particular section on mixing flesh tones with the idea of applying it in the following week’s workshop on painting people. We will do a quick still life or self portrait at the end to try out our new colour mixing prowess! Student limit: 12
Workshop Held at Art Metro, 465 Papanui Road, Christchurch $80
Saturday, August 23rd: Painting People From Direct Observation. 10am-3pm
Another workshop designed for everyone! Using oils or acrylics, we will paint directly from a clothed model in the studio. Observational painting is the best and quickest way to make your paintings skills progress to the next level. Using well considered lighting and compositions we will discuss the particular issues inherent to observational painting. We will review issues such as anatomy, light and shade on flesh tones and controlling the temperature of your painting. Drawing issues will be discussed as these are vital to understanding observational painting. Bring your paints and brushes. Other supplies will be mailed out upon registration. These first two workshops would be a great combination and you’ll get a bit of a deal if you sign up for both! $160 for both August 16th and 23rd workshops! Student limit: 12
Workshop Held at Art Metro, 465 Papanui Road, Christchurch $110 plus $10 model fee
Saturday, August 30th: Foundations of Drawing. 10am-2pm $80
A new workshop! If there is one thing that most students mention as a deficiency in their art toolbox it’s drawing! This workshop will specifically address the most important tool for advancing your art, no matter the medium. Using pencil, charcoal and other dry media we will discuss a host of issues important to understanding observational drawing. Perspective, proportions, composition, value, line and many other concepts will be covered. Student limit: 12
